EARTHQUAKE ENGINEERING PRACTICE Creating Fragility Functions for Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering

چکیده
The Applied Technology Council is adapting PEER’s performance-based earthquake engineering methodology to professional practice. The methodology’s damage-analysis stage uses fragility functions to calculate the probability of damage to facility components given the force, deformation, or other engineering demand parameter (EDP) to which each is subjected. This paper introduces a set of procedures for creating fragility functions from various kinds of data: (A) actual EDP at which each specimen failed; (B) bounding EDP, in which some specimens failed and one knows the EDP to which each specimen was subjected; (C) capable EDP, where specimen EDPs are known but no specimens failed; (D) derived, where fragility functions are produced analytically; (E) expert opinion; and (U) updating, in which one improves an existing fragility function using new observations. Methods C, E, and U are all introduced here for the first time. A companion document offers additional procedures and more examples. DOI: 10.1193/1.2720892

Seismic fragility assessment of RC moment resisting frame buildings designed for different editions of Iranian seismic design code
Background and objective: Developing fragility and vulnerability functions are important tools in seismic reliability assessment of buildings and are widely used in regional seismic risk studies. To date sufficient studies for developing analytical fragility functions for Iranian code-conforming buildings have not been carried out. Performing such studies are necessary to assess the adequacy of...
متن کاملFragility of Hydraulic Elevators for Use in Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering
New performance-based earthquake engineering methods developed by the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center, the Applied Technology Council, and others include damage analysis at a highly detailed level, requiring the compilation of fragility functions for a large number of damageable generic structural and nonstructural components. This brief paper presents the development of a fragil...
متن کاملA Performance-Based Earthquake Engineering Method to Estimate Downtime in Critical Facilities
A method is offered to estimate downtime (the time to restore a facility to operability, not total repair time) for second-generation performance-based earthquake engineering. It applies in cases where downtime is primarily controlled by nonstructural systems (although red-tagging and lifeline failure are addressed); restoration begins immediately after the earthquake; and components are repair...
متن کاملFragility Functions for Older Rc Beam-column Joints
A critical step in performance-based seismic design is the prediction and definition of earthquake performance using terms that are meaningful to building owners. Recently, economic impact, defined as the cost of repairing earthquake damage and the building downtime required to complete the repair work, has been adopted as a meaningful measure of building performance. To enable earthquake engin...

In this study, an existing hospital structure has been evaluated with incremental dynamic analysis (IDA). This building is accommodated in Karaj with soil type II. At first, two 2-D frames along X, Y direction are selected. Then, five performance levels are determined according to “Rehabilitation Code for Existing Buildings (Publication No. 360) including Immediate Operational (IO), Limited Dam...
